During the 3rd round of the tournament, Jon Rahm went nuclear and played his way into a 2-stroke lead that he never gave it back. Even after he found himself in a predicament late in the final round where a player of a lesser caliber would have surrendered a stroke, and gone into the last hole with doubt and the potential of a playoff weighing on their mind.
Luckily for Jon, he's not a player of a lesser caliber, he's the OWGR #1 player in the world (again). He scrambled out of a bunker on #17 and nailed a long putt to escape with a par. He played through #18 getting another par, only needing a short tap-in putt to secure a victory. It wasn't without drama though as Max Homa gave it his all in an attempt to put the pressure on, nearly holing a chip out of the rough that would have brought him within 1 stroke of Rahm. It wasn't meant to be and shouldn't take away from his own great performance, -15 is enough to win it most weeks.
Rahm is off to an incredible start this season, with The Genesis Invitational being his third win of 2023. He now has more PGA Tour wins (10) than his idol, Spanish golf hero Seve Ballasteros, and at this pace it feels as if Rahm could win 10 more by the end of this season. Calling this run anything other than dominant would be an understatement, we can only hope that he can keep this rolling into the Master's. Which is now less than 45 days away.
Wrapping Up:
Overall this event was everything that it was hyped up to be. A shootout by the world's best players with the added bonus of the greatest player of all-time, Tiger Woods, not only making an appearance but also firing off a four-under 67 on Saturday. When it comes to golf, Tiger doesn't just move the needle, he is the needle. As the PGA tour kicks off the Florida swing, it will be interesting to see if we'll see him again at The Player's Championship, in March.
